The Elephant In the Room - Art, Wellbeing, and Our School Values

1st Feb 2026
A large-scale, in-school sculpture that aims to provoke conversation about things that are really obvious, yet we find difficult to talk about.

For 2 weeks in February, Draíocht is out and about in 2 Dublin 15 Primary Schools with Paul Curley's 'The Elephant in the Room'

The Elephant in the Room is a stand-alone sculpture that aims to provoke conversation about things that are really obvious, yet we still find difficult to talk about.

Standing more than 3.5 meters high, this bespoke Elephant (designed and created by Ger Clancy with Paul Curley) resides in a school for one week, allowing the whole school community to witness the wonder of this curious creature.

"The Elephant in the Room" is more than just a sculpture; it’s a visual metaphor for a common human experience.

The phrase "elephant in the room" refers to a major issue or problem that everyone is aware of but no one wants to address. It could be a worry, a conflict, or something that feels awkward to talk about.

This artwork connects directly to our school's commitment to wellbeing and open communication. We encourage our school community to:

  • Be Brave: If something is bothering you, don't let it become your own "elephant." Talk to a teacher, a friend, or a family member.

  • Be Kind: If you sense someone else might be struggling with an "elephant," offer a listening ear.

Developed and created with the support of The Arts Council YPCE AGF 2024.
